Jenkinson’s opinion:
Ranger was one of the best selling Baileys – ever! The range from 1996 set a benchmark for value, spec and lightweight touring. By 2008, the Series 5 ranger was changed to Series 6, but Bailey added a GT60 version with a higher spec including glazed stable door, alloys, triple front opening windows and GT graphics. For the extra cash you could get GT Series 6 over the basic series 6, however, there was a market for the straight one piece front window versions.
These tourers had lots going for them, slightly lighter in weight and providing sheer value for your cash. The Ranger Series 6 entry models command a good used price especially if in excellent condition – people still love the Ranger, a lineup that the Bailey has never managed to follow. The 460 makes a great entry into caravanning for the first time buyer.
How to find a good one
It’s a case of checking out Bailey dealers who manage to get these in, but they fly out, so once spotted make your mind up quick! You will find them at most dealerships as trade-ins. Private is again a way of buying one but do the usual checks, such as looking for damage and also ownership and outstanding finance. You could get a great buy with an awning and a few water containers but at the dealership a warranty is usually the offer and, of course, a service before you get it off the forecourt.
There are a few around, but if you see the GT60 version you will find little price difference, so if you can tow the extra kgs and afford a few extra pennies the GT60 is a worthy buy with the upgraded kit. However, the Starter Series 6 460/4 offers a great tourer and again that front bed makes into a double for sleeping four.
